NEON IN COLLABORATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND SPORTS PRESENT

CONTEMPORARY HERITAGE

DR. LINA MENDONI

MINISTER OF CULTURE & SPORTS
HELLENIC REPUBLIC

NICHOLAS YATROMANOLAKIS

GENERAL SECRETARY OF CONTEMPORARY CULTURE
MINISTRY OF CULTURE & SPORTS
HELLENIC REPUBLIC

From its inception, the role of NEON has been to bring contemporary culture closer to everyone; closer to an uninitiated audience; closer to each of us. Our space is the city, and it will continue to be. At this time, staying at home is a necessary disruption from our habitual physical relationship with our city, but not from our mental and emotional desire to reconnect with each other again. If this ongoing crisis has taught us anything, it is how deeply interdependent we all are.

Our programme is carefully thought out to serve a community of people – exhibition-making that engages with the fabric of society, both our heritage and our present. Our initiatives focus on empowering our participatory nature, embracing diversity and deepening our understanding of the other.

More than half a million people have visited our exhibitions in Athens and around Greece, 28 exhibitions in 23 different locations, over 7 years. From the magnificent archaeological site of Delos, to the ‘secret gardens’ of Athens and our partnerships with museums, our engagement has focused on the relationship between the city’s public space and its citizens: as a birthplace for sociality, culture and civilization.

On this dedicated website, created in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, we celebrate the dynamic encounter that occurs when past and present collide. We embrace association, allegiance and creativity, and find comfort and strength through our interwoven relationships; through art. This site provides an immersive world where the stories of our ancient past merge with the experience of art making today: our contemporary heritage.

DIMITRIS DASKALOPOULOS
